Post by WoWYea.. Tuan IR Hj Othman...stopping hogging all the bandwidth with your
bittorrent download.....
Actually I didn't use bittorrent for so long, after I've finished
downloading naruto films and others, for a total size of 4Gbyte in 2
weeks.
Despite my download speed of less than 100 kb/s, I still manage to
browse as usual. There is no diffence in speed whether I switch on
bittorrent or not.
I don't really understand but using Azuresu country plug-in, I managed
to monitor the countries that I can download from.
There is still little traffic from Malaysia but I notice some from
Singapore, virutally none from Malaysia and Philippines.
So bittorrent does not help downloading files that aren't really wanted
by many Malaysians, let alone Sabahans.
Gnutella, such as Limewire, is more popular and used for downlading
music.Since it is decentralised P2P, searching for uncommon files will
be very difficult and it is only useful for downloading small file
because it still does not implemnt swarm, i.e. downloading pieces from
multiple sites.
TMNET link to USA may be slow, but not so from Europe and Japan, so
hopefully bittorrent will allow us to download more reliably and the
fastest without disturbing our browsing functionality.
Bitttorrent has achieved this and I recommend everyone who download
large files to use bittorrent. It may take weeks to complete but it
will be the fastest that TMNET link can give.
After talking to someone who is in charge of installing DSLAMs, and
discussions, I was told that TMNET is in the process of installing
router technology at Kota Kinabalu. Hopefully, it will solve Sabahan
problems since Gnutella certainly hogs our links that currently has to
go to KL and back again, degrading our international link speed in the
process.
With the router, these more widespread music download can remain
localised at Kota Kinabalu. Despite the low cost involved, this is put
in low priority. The highest priority is in upgrading TMNET link to KL.
The dimensioning for speed to TMNET central server is 100kb/s per
person fully occupied, i.e. if everybody download large files all at
the same time, they can only get speed of 100kb/s, but only to KL.
International is another matter.
Although the download speed is not that much better than a dial-up,
non-bittorrent, streamyx is still better because it allows us to browse
while downloading large files with too little degradation, It also
allows us to download for weeks, without excessive charges, unlike
dial-up.
My old classmate, got into hundreds of TMNET bill in one month, due to
his son playing on-line gaming, Ragnarok. He can play using dial-up
speed but it becomes costly if the usage is too high.
So work wisely, and expect problems. You may complain, but be nice. Do
your best first in a difficult situation. Don't be a racist bastard.

If it is true that you are handling Streamyx in Sabah & Sarawak, we would
appreciate if you could you kindly tell us what is really the problem with
the international link. So far all complaints to TmNet have been useless!
Thank you.
He probably stole the bandwidth from the Telekom safe! :-)
